One of the most self-defeating forms of identity thinking on the contemporary left is the one that revolves around the idea of the “professional-managerial class” — even though it’s usually connected to a vehement attack on “identity politics.” These professionals and managers, usually referred to as “PMC,” have been defined as the salaried mental workers whose jobs are essentially the reproduction of capitalism, and thus have distinct economic interests antagonistic to the working class, and constitute an obstacle to socialism.
